Membership

This page provides access to the current list of Graduate Faculty members and offers the opportunity to apply for new membership or renew your existing membership. It also includes information on the types of memberships, qualifications, responsibilities and contributions, as well as reappointment regulations.

Qualifications

  • Shall hold the highest degree ordinarily awarded in their field. Exceptions can be made on the recommendation of the Membership Committee of the Graduate Faculty or upon two-thirds vote of the members present and voting at a regular meeting or a special meeting called for that purpose.
  • Shall hold a tenured/tenure-track position of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
  • Shall have demonstrated evidence of activity in research or in creative or scholarly work beyond the scope of their own advanced degree. Such evidence may include:
    1. Relevant publications in refereed journals or proceedings of technical or research conferences where participants are selected by a program committee.
    2. An active research program that has either received support based on a research proposal reviewed by qualified scholars or is evaluated by the Membership Committee of the Graduate Faculty, after careful consideration, as being of high quality. If the program has been active for several years, it must have led to publications to be considered valid evidence.
    3. Teaching and development of new graduate-level courses, which may include the authorship of textbooks.

Newly hired faculty at the Assistant Professor level or higher, holding the highest degree in their field, will automatically be approved for membership, subject to reappointment regulations outlined in the Rules and Regulations of the Graduate Faculty.

Responsibilities and Contributions

  • Mentor and support graduate students as an advisor or committee member.
  • Contribute to initiatives that promote student success and achievement.
  • Assist in the development and review of graduate programs and policies.
  • Maintain high academic standards within graduate programs.
  • Participate in decisions related to curriculum, admissions, and degree conferral.

Reappointment Regulations

  • Full members are reviewed six years after initial appointment and every five years thereafter to assess continued involvement in graduate work.
  • Petitions for membership must be submitted to the Vice Provost of Graduate Education by department chairs by October 1 (Fall Semester) or March 1 (Spring Semester).
  • Petitions must include supporting evidence to substantiate the qualifications of the candidate.
  • The Membership Committee reviews petitions and submits qualified candidates to the President of the Graduate Faculty with a recommendation for election.
  • The President forwards the Membership Committee's recommendations to all Graduate Faculty members. Petitions and supporting evidence for recommended candidates are made available to Graduate Faculty members at least three days before the membership election.

Qualifications

Individuals not meeting the criteria for Full Membership may apply for Associate Membership. Upon recommendation by the Membership Committee and approval by the Graduate Faculty, Associate Membership will be granted. Associate members include research, adjunct, or visiting professors, and lecturers. Associate members, possess all privileges of a full member apart from voting on matters brought before the Graduate Faculty.

  • Contribute to initiatives that promote student success and achievement.

Reappointment Regulations

  • Associate Membership is valid for the normal full membership review period outlined in the Rules and Regulations or their appointment at S&T, whichever is shorter.
  • Any member of the Graduate Faculty who is granted Emeritus shall retain their existing membership rights and privileges for the remainder of their affiliation with the University. Emeritus faculty who wish to resign their membership in the Graduate Faculty may do so by notifying the Vice Provost of Graduate Education.

  • Any full member of the Graduate Faculty who terminates employment with the University shall retain Associate Membership status for two (2) years after their departure from the University. Should they wish to extend this appointment further, they will need to apply for Associate Membership as outlined in the Rules and Regulations.
